Mosfilm - Mirror of the Empire (52 mn)
SVODVODThe major European film studios
The Mosfilm studios were inaugurated in 1931 by Stalin. Five thousand people worked on a site the size of the Kremlin, a true labyrinthine city dedicated to cinema and the glory of the proletariat. The greatest directors benefited from the latest advances. From Eisenstein to Mikhalkov, Mosfilm was home to the gotha of Soviet cinema who, until perestroika, produced more than half of the country's films. In 1991, the collapse of the Soviet Union sounded the death knell for the studios, which were divided up and privatised. In this ghost town, almost deserted, a few diehards raise chickens and goats, when they are not making chairs and staircases from the sets. The old-fashioned glamour of the studios is still alive in this hand-held camera operator, twirling around on roller skates among the waltzers in Sergei Bondartchouk's "War and Peace".
