Ladakh, on the road to progress (52 mn)

VOD

Ladakh, often called little Tibet, located in northwestern India, is an ancient independent kingdom of Tibetan origin. Very isolated in the middle of the Himalayas, on the borders of Pakistan, China and Tibet, it did not open to the world until 1960 with the breakthrough of its first and one of the highest road on the planet, road of all hazard! It is only from 1974 that it will be accessible to tourists. Thus, in about forty years, Ladakh has gone from the age of yak caravans to that of 4X4 convoys!

High and cold plateau more than 3 000m, it is a mineral desert. He has always been a victim of lack of rain and snow. As everywhere, it must now deal with global warming and the retreat of glaciers. How do ladhakis adapt to this aridity and cultivate their fields? Engineers developed techniques to store water in the form of ice in winter, such as Sonam Wangchuk, who began to green the desert with plantations of thousands of willows and poplars. Secmol, a pilot school, innovative, ecological, humanistic, unique in Ladakh and perhaps in India, will be the thread of the film.

We will discover the country through the seasons to better permeate our environment and its inhabitants. Its culture, through its music, its dances, its festivals and Buddhist rituals of monasteries, through its habitat, its traditional architecture. Discover its sport culture with polo and ice hockey. Leh, its capital of 50,000 inhabitants, the only city in Ladakh is a concentrate of all the excesses of modernism. An exceptional meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama came to give teachings of Wisdom.

Changes, modernism, "progress" are shaking up traditions more and more, but have not yet done away with them; because thanks to a few visionaries, Ladakh seems on the way to a real progress adapted to the context of the country, because it is worth it.
